Fifty-some years after cranking up its first chairlift, Aspen/Snowmass remains the soul of winter sports in America. And the skiing and riding here is only getting better!
Four ski areas are operated by Aspen Skiing Company.:
Aspen
Mountain, also known as Ajax, is a vertical smorgasbord of double-black and tree runs
for skiers and snowboarders. It rises 3,267 feet from the heart of downtown
Aspen. Opened in 1947, Aspen Mountain's steeps, bumps and incredible
views have been famous for decades.
Terrain:
673 acres / 273 hectares
Trails: easiest – 0%, more difficult – 48%, most difficult
– 26%, expert – 26%
Aspen Highlands, about one mile west of town, is the mountain locals call their favorite, whether looking for its extreme terrain, groomed cruisers or breathtaking perspectives of the Maroon Bells. Then there's Highland Bowl - an ultimate off-piste experience where a 30-minute hike up a knife-edge ridge buys untracked descents down pitches as steep as 45-degrees. NEW for 2005-2006! Deep Temerity - acres of new advanced and expert terrain that will open for this season along with the Deep Temerity triple chair, which rises 1,700 vertical feet in 7.3 minutes.
Terrain: 970
acres/393 hectares
Trails: easiest: 18%, more difficult: 30%, most difficult: 16%, expert:

Buttermilk Mountain, two miles west of Aspen, is the home of the ESPN Winter X Games through 2010 (for an unprecedented run of nine consecutive years!). Buttermilk also welcomes beginners, and is known as possibly the best training mountain in the world. New and less experienced skiers and riders cruise wide, rolling trails while experts jib in the terrain park, or power down the black runs of Tiehack. There's something for everyone at Buttermilk!
Terrain: 435 acres/176 hectares
Trails: easiest: 35%, more difficult: 39%, most difficult: 26%, expert:

Parks and Pipes: 2 terrain parks (Crazy T'rain and S3) and 1 superpipe
Snowmass,
twelve miles northwest of Aspen boasts the longest vertical
drop in the USA (4,400 feet). Topping out at 12,510', the Cirque
lift is the highest in the U.S. and was the first in the country to
be operated solely by clean, renewable wind power. Snowmass is bigger than Aspen, Highlands, and Buttermilk combined, and can keep even the most seasoned skier finding something new year after year after year.
Terrain: 3,128
acres / 1,266 hectares
Trails: easiest: 6%, more difficult: 50%, most difficult: 12%, expert:

Pipes and Parks: Terrain Parks (Pipeline, Makaha and Scooper), 1 superpipe
and 1 minipipe
