Mountainfilm in Aspen presents: No Man's Land @ Wheeler Opera House

Why did a group of heavily armed, self-described patriots occupy the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in the winter of 2016? The occupation of Malheur emerged from economic hard times on the range; it featured a collision of symbols, the rugged cowboy of the American West versus the allegedly tyrannical federal government; it became a focal point for a plethora of right-wing causes; and it was a major media circus. Perhaps the most surprising revelation in the rigorously nonjudgmental feature documentary No Man’s Land  — a Mountainfilm Commitment Grant-funded project by David Byars  — is the heady sense of purpose appropriated by the occupiers in championing the cause of liberty, even as the substance of their grievance remains elusive. As militia member Jason Patrick concludes, the Malheur occupation was “basically some pissed-off people trying to get their voices heard.”

Bumper Jacksons | On the Rise Series @ Wheeler Opera House

Unafraid to scrap together new sounds from forgotten 78’s, the Bumper Jacksons elegantly balance paying homage to the traditions while fashioning their own unique, playful style.  The group began as a duo, a city-meets-country experiment between songstress Jess Eliot Myhre and banjo player Chris Ousley. In five short years, Bumper Jacksons grew to a brassy seven-piece, with horns and pedal steel.  They’ve been honored multiple times as the Mid-Atlantic’s “Artist of the Year” & “Best Traditional Band” at the Washington Area Music Awards.

Seth Glier | On the Rise Series @ Wheeler Opera House

Despite his relatively young age, recording artist Seth Glier is a seasoned troubadour. A singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who averages over 250 live performances annually, Seth has gone from opening act to headlining his own shows and playing major festivals. He’s shared the stage with artists as diverse as James Taylor, Ani DiFranco, Edwin McCain, Martin Sexton, Emmylou Harris and Ryan Adams, and has quickly become known for his passionate live sets and powerful command of both piano and guitar. No stranger to Aspen audiences, Glier has performed at the Wheeler multiple times before, including a guest performance with “American Idol” favorite Crystal Bowersox last year. Glier’s latest album, “Birds,” was released on August 25.

On the Rise with Front Country presented by The Wheeler Associates @ Wheeler Opera House

An acoustic band born in the land of tech innovation, Front Country stepped out of the genre of American roots music and has been described as Roots Pop. Cutting their teeth in progressive bluegrass jams in San Francisco’s Mission District and rehearsing in the East Bay, they learned to play roots music their own way, with the tools they had on hand. After taking home first prize at the RockyGrass and Telluride festivals, and the release of their debut full-length album “Sake of the Sound” in 2014, Front Country began the nose-grinding work of making their name as a national touring act.
